Intent

At Smawthorne Henry Moore Academy, our geography curriculum aims to foster a lifelong curiosity and fascination about the world and its people.

We want our pupils to develop a deep understanding of their local area and a wider knowledge of diverse places, both in the UK and across the globe. Through high-quality, practical teaching, we equip our pupils with the essential knowledge and geographical skills needed to explore, investigate, and understand the relationship between physical and human environments.

Ultimately, we seek to create informed, responsible, and empathetic global citizens who are prepared to make a positive contribution to the world.

Geography is taught through geographical concepts: maps, data handling, fieldwork and comparison with a focus on the eight geographs strands which run throughout the whole of the Smawthorne Geography, helping children to make links between prior and current learning.

The Geography Strands:

• Comparison – Compare places or features (similarities and differences)
• Transport and Trade – Ways people travel and goods and services that are sold in different countries
• Place Knowledge – Explain what a place is like
• Locational knowledge – Recall where places are
• Human Geography – How people and the environment impact places
• Physical Geography – Natural features in the environment
• Map skills and fieldwork – Using maps and observing and collecting data and information
• Environmental Issues – How we look after our world

Through the #SmawthorneExperience, our geography curriculum is enriched school visits and visitors, which creates opportunities for children to remember their lifelong learning experiences.
