Admission Information Including Open Events

Admission arrangements

Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions you will make, and at Smawthorne Henry Moore Academy we understand just how significant that choice is.

We value parents as partners in every child’s educational journey and believe that working together is key to helping pupils thrive.

We warmly welcome prospective parents to come and look around our academy, see our community in action, and learn more about what makes our school special. Our team will be more than happy to answer any questions and discuss how we can support your child to achieve their very best.  Please contact the school on 01977 558395 to arrange a visit.

Open Evenings for Reception in September 2027

We have arranged two Reception Open Evenings for prospective parents wishing to visit the school, which will be held on Wednesday 4 November, 4.00-5.30pm, and Wednesday 18 November, 4.00-5.30pm.  Please contact the school on 01977 558395 to reserve a place.

Part-time applications

Admissions to the nursery and pre-school are administered by the school on the receipt of a completed application form and Parent Agreement.  We will also need to see evidence of your child's date of birth, eg, birth certificate or passport.  We offer 15 hours provision in our pre-school (for 2+ years) and up to 30 hours provision in our nursery (for 3+ years).

If we have the capacity to meet all applications, every child will be offered a place.  If we are oversubscribed (more applications received than there are places available), places will be allocated using the criteria in our Early Years Admissions Policy (please see below).

Full time applications

All full-time admissions and in-year transfers to the school are administered by Wakefield Council's Admissions Team, who can be contacted on 01924 306052 or admissions@wakefield.gov.uk.   Please contact the Admissions Team in order to complete a Common Application Form.

Our Published Annual Admissions Number is 60.  If the number of preferences received does not exceed the admission number, all preferences will be met.  If the school is oversubscribed, preference will be in line with Wakefield Admissions Policy (please see below for further details).

Any parent whose child is not offered a school place for which they have expressed a preference, has the right to appeal to an independent appeal panel.  Please refer to Wakefield Admissions Policy below for further details.

Places for Reception from September 2027 will be made through an online application system, which goes live on 1 November 2026. You should receive a Parents' Guide and details of how to apply direct to your home address from Wakefield Council.   The national closing date is 15 January 2027; you will be able to log back in to your account from 12.30am on 16 April 2027 to find out the school offered.  The link for Reception admissions is: Apply for a Reception place

Where the LA offers a Reception place at the school, a parent who accepts that school place can defer entry to the school until the term after the child's fifth birthday.  Any deferred place will be held for that child and will not be available to be offered to another child and the deferred place must be taken up during the same school year in which the offer was made and accepted.  Parents cannot defer entry to a school to the next academic year or beyond the beginning of the term following the child's fifth birthday.  If you wish to defer your child's place, please contact Wakefield Admissions.
